Level Design Patterns That Invoke Curiosity-Driven Exploration

چکیده

Video games frequently feature 'open world' environments, designed to motivate exploration. Level design patterns are implemented invoke curiosity and guide player behavior. However, evidence of the efficacy such has remained theoretical. This study presents an empirical how level impact curiosity-driven exploration in a 3D open-world video game. 254 participants played game using between-subjects factorial design, testing 4 variables: presence or absence patterns, goal open-ended, nature alien aesthetic, assured unassured compensation. Data collection consisted in-game metrics emotion word prompts as well post-game questionnaires. Results show that heightened exploration, but this effect is influenced by explicit monetary There appear be many motivations behind exploratory behavior games, with raising expectations players. A disposition for (i.e. 'trait curiosity') was not found influence We interpret discuss conditions, individual motivations.

Curiosity-Driven Exploration with Planning Trajectories

Reinforcement learning (RL) agents can reduce learning time dramatically by planning with learned predictive models. Such planning agents learn to improve their actions using planning trajectories, sequences of imagined interactions with the environment. However, planning agents are not intrinsically driven to improve their predictive models, which is a necessity in complex environments. This p...

Proximo-Distal Competence Based Curiosity-Driven Exploration

Learning constraints and guiding mechanisms are involved since the very beginning of the infant development. Allowing a progressive and open-ended scaffolding of new skills, these mechanisms have been described as crucial, by psychologists and neuroscientists. Developmental heuristics presented here are directly inspired by the ability to control the growth of complexity of both exploration and...

Curiosity-driven Exploration for Mapless Navigation with Deep Reinforcement Learning

This paper investigates exploration strategies of Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) methods to learn navigation policies for mobile robots. In particular, we augment the normal external reward for training DRL algorithms with intrinsic reward signals measured by curiosity. We test our approach in a mapless navigation setting, where the autonomous agent is required to navigate without the occupa...

Would You Look at That! Vision-Driven Procedural Level Design

In this paper we present a technique for procedurally generating sections of 3D level geometry using computational evolution and guided by the visibility of certain game objects or areas during play. We show that certain level design goals can be achieved in the resulting levels, such as encouraging or dissuading player sightings of certain objects or locations. We also give details of a simple...
